Gurus, Swamis, & Yogis: Searching for Spirituality in India

Studying Hinduism?

Want to show your students a glimpse of the spiritual nature of India's holy cities?

These cities are a colorful mix of seekers searching for meaning from gurus, astrologers, swamis, and yogis. CNN's Jessica Ravitz spent two weeks in the holy city of Rishikesh along the Ganges River on what she calls, "a personal mission: to write about this place and what it means to those who flock here."

The result is a colorful and fascinating feature story called  Indian Awakenings.  She introduces us to an interesting  mix of personalities. She says, "it's a place where people gush about gurus, bow down at their feet, dance in ecstasy and chant in Sanskrit. "

She introduces us to Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, a 61 year old wise man, who travels the world with his message of caring not just for people but Mother Earth." Ravitz notes that celebrities, students, politicians and other spiritual leaders absorb his wisdom."

This is a terrific story that students will enjoy and it will help them to understand the rich spirituality of India's holy cities.
